Managing the near-surface lens in Sub-Andean seismic imaging

In structurally complex environ- ments such as the Andes Mountains and foothills, outcropping rocks and differential weathering generate signi- fi cant variations in near-surface seismic velocities. In time processing, these fl uctuations are corrected through wea- thering statics, which minimize the time delays caused by variations in near-sur- face velocities associated with weathe- ring. These statics are calculated using fi rst-break energy on shot records (refraction statics), followed by statics derived from the correlation of seismic refl ectors (refl ection statics).
