High-resolution seismic imaging in complex foothills environments using Kirchhoff prestack time and depth migration.

Technical Overview

We use Kirchhoff Prestack time and depth migration for its ability to accurately image data beneath rough topographic surfaces.

In foothills environments, velocity picking for prestack time migration presents significant challenges. Noisy, low-fold image gathers often provide insufficient diagnostic quality. As a standard practice in foothills processing, we scan through a suite of constant-velocity migrated sections to determine the prestack time migration that best images each reflector.

Methodological Approach

Constant Velocity Scanning Strategy

Rather than relying exclusively on gather-based diagnostics, we evaluate a suite of constant-velocity migrated sections to identify the optimal reflector imaging.

This approach improves interpretive confidence in structurally complex terrains where conventional semblance-driven workflows are unreliable.

Keys to Effective Velocity Analysis

Effective velocity analysis in foothills environments requires:

Experience with foothills data
Understanding acquisition limitations, noise characteristics, and structural complexity.

An understanding of compressional structural styles
Knowledge of thrust systems, duplex structures, and fold-thrust geometries.

Close collaboration with the client interpreter
Velocity picking is interpretive. Continuous communication ensures geological consistency.

A hybrid velocity analysis package
Combining gather diagnostics with stack-image analysis for optimal decision-making.
